What Florida Humidity Does to a Piano
Short answer: changing humidity causes a piano’s wooden soundboard and action parts to expand and contract. That movement changes string tension, pitch stability and sometimes the feel of the keys.
On the Treasure Coast, humidity is not an abstract number. It arrives with an afternoon storm, an open lanai door, a week of strong air conditioning or a house closed while its owners travel north. A piano quietly records those changes.
The soundboard is a crowned wooden surface connected to the strings through the bridges. As it gains moisture, its shape can change and increase pressure against the strings. As it dries, that pressure can decrease. The result is not always that every note moves equally; one section may drift differently from another.
Consistency is more important than chasing a perfect number
Yamaha care guidance commonly places a piano’s preferred relative humidity near the middle range, while the Piano Technicians Guild discusses approximately 42 percent as an ideal condition. In a Florida home, the practical objective is to limit large swings.

What about coastal salt air?
A piano indoors is protected from direct exposure, but high moisture can still affect metal, felt, leather and wood. Homes close to the Indian River Lagoon, Atlantic beaches or waterways deserve special attention to ventilation and consistency.
